The stretch of coastline around the Hiking Shack is one of the last places in South Africa where the ocean still feels raw and unspoiled. No traffic. No crowds. Just rolling dunes, hidden coves, shipwrecks, and miles of golden sand that seem to go on forever. The Mtentu River has a vast sand bank a short canoe ride away. Perfect for families.
I've walked every beach on this stretch more times than I can count. Each one surprises you differently depending on the tide, the light, the season. There's something on this coastline for everyone, and the best way to find it is to slow down and start wandering.
Here, every beach has its own character, from dramatic cliffs and rocky pools to calm estuaries and surf breaks. Spend a few days wandering, and you'll start to see why the Wild Coast has a magic all its own.

Pebble Beach & Skate Bay: Right on Your Doorstep

Just a short walk from the Hiking Shack is where most adventures begin. First treasures are sought on Pebble Beach, heart-shaped stones etched by continuous tumbling by the waves. Then on to Skate Bay for a refreshing dip in the ocean, whilst possibly nearby, fishermen cast lines in the early morning light, while late afternoons often bring fiery sunsets that light up the rocks.
Sikombe Estuary

Sikombe River mouth has a small steamship that was wrecked years ago. Learn more about the shipwrecks on the wild coast. The farmers in Port St.Johns would send their produce down the coast to Durban for sale. The quickest route was by sea because of all the difficult terrain and gorges along the Wild Coast. This is an ideal place for the kiddies. A shallow, normally warm lagoon, and not far over the sand, the Indian Ocean awaits.
The mix of river and ocean makes it one of the most peaceful spots on the coast, ideal for a lazy swim after a day of hiking or kayaking.
The Viewpoint

You wade across the top of Leopard Rock Falls to reach the viewpoint, and what greets you on the other side stops most people in their tracks. A magnificent panoramic view of the Mtentu River far below and the river mouth opening to the sea. I've seen hikers stand up there for twenty minutes without saying a word.
Paradise Pool

A short distance from the viewpoint, you'll find Paradise Pool, one of the best natural swimming spots I know on the entire Wild Coast. A small waterfall cascades into it, and the water is always clear. It's the kind of place that makes you want to cancel the rest of your plans.
Pushengunwe Falls

About 3 kilometres from Paradise Pool is the top of Pushengunwe Falls, another marvellous view of the Mtentu River. If you wade or paddle upstream, you'll find another great natural pool, quieter than Paradise Pool, and worth the extra effort to reach it.
You never know what you'll find until you wander around the next bend.
Kwatengadusi

Literally means " buy from close by," and this is not a place to miss. On your way to or from your adventures. Ice cold beverages await you, and then down to the Hiking Shack 200 meters away.
