If you follow the footpaths past the river bend, beyond the grazing cows and the occasional goat with too much confidence. You will find yourself walking into the grounds of the Hiking Shack within Mr Thulani’s village. A place where the sea breeze always seems to arrive before you do.
Tucked right there, under the big sky and among the Sonjica family’s homesteads, sits The Hiking Shack. Built many years ago by an Indian friend of Thulanis' father, both of whom have since passed away many years ago. Elena found the Shack abandoned, and arrangements were made to spruce it up as best as possible and run a small holiday resort.
Elena runs it these days under the family’s umbrella, and if you’ve ever met my wife, you’ll know it’s in gentle, capable hands. She’s made it a place where hikers drop their heavy packs with relief… and where tired souls remember how good it feels to sit still for a moment.

A Community Home With Its Own Story

The Hiking Shack
Now, many people assume The Hiking Shack belongs to Mtentu Ramble, because we get so many of Kelly’s hikers passing through.
But let me say this clearly, the way Mr Thulani would:
“The Shack stands on our land. It has its own heart.”
It’s owned by the Sonjica family, rooted in this community, and happens to be perfectly placed along the Ramble route.
It’s independent, proudly local, and run with the kind of authenticity you can’t buy or manufacture; you can only live it
Who the Shack Is For (In Other Words: Everyone Who Needs a Breather)
Most people arrive with hiking poles and muddy socks, but the Shack has become a bit of an all-rounder:
Hikers & Wild Coast Adventurers
A happy group of Kelly's hikers
- Mtentu Ramble hikers
- Beach wanderers
- Multi-day trekkers
- Trail runners
- Birdwatchers with binoculars bigger than their backpacks
Families & Connection Seekers
Some intrepid explorers cycle here from the Wild Coast Casino.
- Fathers and sons trying to outrun city stress
- Mothers and daughters catching up along the untouched coastline
- Friends escaping for a weekend
- Anyone who wants to remember what silence sounds like (minus the farm animals)
- Families with children, small & large. We live on site and do not lock doors. It is safe here, unlike the rest of SA.
Retreats & Small Groups
Baboon Cave. People taking a leap of faith
I’ve seen everything from ladies’ pamper days to yoga mats being unrolled at sunrise.
Even wellness weekends where people swear the sea breeze alone healed them.
Small Teams & Creatives
A drink tank, oops. A think tank around the cosy firepit.
Believe it or not, a few groups have come here to “brainstorm”.
I’m not sure how much work they got done; the view is distracting, and the Shebeen's ice-cold beers are far too close, yet they left inspired, so I suppose that counts as a bonus.
What the Shack Offers (Besides Peace and Good Stories)
Simple, Rustic Sleeping Space

The Hiking Shack is clean and safe
It’s dorm-style - open-plan and communal - perfect for groups who want to bunk together in true hiker fashion.
No frills. No fuss. Just clean, safe, and surprisingly comfortable. Some breathtaking short hikes in the Mtentu area.
Elena can have you bused in and out from the casino, which will save your vehicle from a dirt road which can become almost unnavigable in the rainy season.
A Self-Catering Kitchen That Actually Works

The resident chefs area
Gas stove, gas/electric fridge/deep freeze, big electric deep freeze, pots, pans, microwave, big mugs for early morning tea - everything you need. The ice machine works overtime normally to try and keep up with the guests' unquenchable thirsts. Of course, we have these marvellous electrical things, but they do need electricity, which goes off occasionally for no reason.
A Catered Option (For Those Who’ve Hiked Enough for One Lifetime)

Supercallafragilistic extradelicious meals
Elena can cook up home-style meals if you want the easy route:
Breakfast, dinner, and even packed lunches for the next day’s trail.
And if you’re vegetarian, don’t worry, she’ll sort you out kindly. The grass is mowed often!

Why I Love This Place (Even When the Wind Tries to Blow My Hat Away)

The viewpoint above Leopard Rock Falls, looking down onto the Mtentu River
The Hiking Shack is one of those places that doesn’t pretend to be anything it’s not.
It’s honest, local, welcoming, and rooted deeply in the community.
It belongs to the Sonjicas, is cared for by Elena, and supported by everyone who walks through its doorway with muddy boots and a grateful grin.
If you want WiFi and white robes, this isn’t the stop for you.
But if you want that Wild Coast feeling, the simple kind, the real kind, then The Hiking Shack will fit you like your favourite old hiking boots.
