Coastal Walks and Beachcombing

Coastal trail along the Wild Coast
The bay at Sikombe River Mouth
From the Hiking Shack, you can also head straight down to the beach. Skate Bay beckons with a rivulet of fresh water running through the sand into the sea. A great beach and a small bay to have a swim in. A short walk away, over a small grassy hill, you will find Pebble Beach. No sand at all visible, just thousands of loose pebbles, clacking with the waves. Like them, foreign ladies with Castanets making a strange sound in the stillness of the coastline.
It's the kind of beach where there are no crowds, pick any spot and have it to yourself. If you're up for more distance, head out to Sharks Point along the rocks. Explore all the rock pools, have a ball. Go around the bend ( not literally) and find the Sikombe Estuary Mouth. A lovely long beach plus a shallow lagoon to swim in, perfect for the kiddies.
The Mini Red Dunes

Red Dunes alongside the Sikombe River
Head inland for about a kilometre and discover a mini Red Sands. No growth of vegetation, just red sands interspersed with thick black veins of sand. So mineral-enriched that nothing grows. These dunes aren't just beautiful, they're ancient. Today, they are a place to wander slowly, soak up the colours, and look out over the Sikombe River and the sky.
Into Mkhambathi Nature Reserve

Eland
From Mtentu, you can also cross the river and explore Mkhambathi Nature Reserve. This 7,700-hectare coastal reserve is renowned for its expansive grasslands and a waterfall that plunges directly into the Indian Ocean.
On foot, you'll hopefully pass herds of Eland grazing, and rivers cutting down to the sea. The trails lead to Horseshoe Falls, Strandloper Falls, and Mkhambathi Falls, where fresh water collides with surf.
It's a hiker's dream: wide-open spaces, wildlife, and dramatic scenery. Plus, as a bonus, leap from Baboon Cave into the pool below. Keep a lookout for Spotty, our resident eel.
