Best Multi-Day Hiking Trails on the Wild Coast, South Africa
The Wild Coast is one of South Africa's last great hiking frontiers, raw, remote, and almost entirely undiscovered. Here are the best multi-day trails, from the famous Pondoland routes to the hidden paths only locals know.

I've been walking this coastline for the better part of twenty years. And I still get that feeling every time I top a grassy hill and the Indian Ocean opens up below me. No cable cars. No crowds. No marker posts every hundred metres telling you where to look. Just the Wild Coast doing its thing, which is to say, quietly taking your breath away while you're still trying to get your bearings.
For hikers, this stretch of the Eastern Cape is something close to paradise. The question is where to start.

Why the Wild Coast is Different

Aerial view of the Wild Coast coastline South Africa
Most hiking in South Africa is about mountains. The Drakensberg, the Cederberg, the Langeberg. Dramatic peaks, boulder fields, altitude, cold nights.
The Wild Coast is something else entirely. The drama here is horizontal. Rivers that pour straight into the Indian Ocean. Red sand cliffs that glow in the afternoon. Beaches that stretch for kilometres without a soul on them. And villages where you eat home-cooked food and sleep in a real bed every night.
It's hiking stripped back to what actually matters. No booking app, no souvenir shop at the trailhead, no guided audio tour telling you what to feel. Just the land, the sea, and a path that asks you to pay attention.
The Mtentu Ramble Explorer Trail

Guided hiking tour Wild Coast South Africa
Distance: 30+ km over 4 days
Difficulty: Moderate
Accommodation: Community homestays
Price: From R4,700 per person, all-inclusive
This is our trail, so I'll be upfront about that. But I'll also tell you honestly: it's unlike anything else on the Wild Coast.
The 4-day guided hike begins at the Wild Coast Sun and ends at Mtentu, winding south along the coast through a landscape that keeps changing on you. Long beaches, river crossings, red dune fields you won't believe are real, and the open grasslands of Mkhambathi Nature Reserve just across the river.
What makes it work is the all-inclusive model. Meals cooked by the community. Guides who grew up on this specific stretch of coast and know it the way you know your own backyard. Homestay accommodation with real Pondoland families. You're not just passing through. You become part of things, even if only for a few days.
The trail includes:
- River crossings by kayak or wade, depending on conditions
- Waterfalls including Horseshoe Falls, Strandloper Falls, and Mkhambathi Falls
- Day hikes into Mkhambathi Nature Reserve for wildlife and birding
- Fresh seafood meals cooked over fire
- Hot bucket showers and proper beds each night

The Wild Coast Meander
Distance: Variable (can be done in sections)
Difficulty: Moderate to challenging
Accommodation: Backpacker lodges and community guesthouses
The Wild Coast Meander is a loose network of routes connecting communities along the coast, from Coffee Bay south towards Port St Johns. It's a self-guided experience for people who prefer to find their own way.
The advantage is flexibility. You set your own pace and choose your distance. The challenge is that logistics need to be sorted in advance, trail markers are patchy in many sections, and river crossings can catch you out badly in the wet season.
If you're new to the Wild Coast, I'd say start with a guided experience before tackling the Meander solo. The terrain, the rivers, and the remoteness all benefit from local knowledge that no map is going to give you.
The Pondoland Hiking Trail
Distance: Approximately 60 km over 5 days
Difficulty: Moderate to strenuous
Accommodation: Basic huts
The Pondoland Trail runs through the heart of the former Transkei, passing cliffs, estuaries, and pockets of indigenous forest. It's one of the classic Wild Coast long-distance routes, the sort that South African hikers have been doing for decades.
The terrain is dramatic but the trail demands self-sufficiency. Huts are basic, provisioning along the way is limited, and you need a decent level of fitness and experience with remote hiking before committing to this one.
The Hole in the Wall Trail
Distance: Day hike or 2-day outing from Coffee Bay
Difficulty: Moderate
Accommodation: Coffee Bay lodges
The Hole in the Wall is one of the Wild Coast's most photographed landmarks, a freestanding sea arch cut from sandstone by centuries of ocean. Walking from Coffee Bay to the Hole in the Wall and back is doable in a long day, or more comfortably over two nights with a stop at a local lodge.
A good choice for people who want a taste of Wild Coast scenery without committing to a full multi-day route.
What Makes a Wild Coast Hike Different from the Rest of South Africa

Group hiking Wild Coast South Africa
Most hiking destinations are wilderness. Protected areas where nature has been carefully preserved and kept separate from the people who live nearby.
The Wild Coast is a living, inhabited coastline. The paths you walk are paths the community has used for generations. The rivers you cross are the same rivers people fish in every morning. The land isn't just scenery, it's someone's home.
That changes the experience completely. On the Mtentu Ramble, you share meals with local families, you listen to guides who grew up on this coast, you sleep in homestays where the family gets up early to make you breakfast before you head out.
It's harder to get to than the Drakensberg, and that's the whole point. The people who make the effort to reach the Wild Coast are rewarded with something increasingly rare in travel: a place that hasn't been smoothed out for tourists.

Best Time to Hike the Wild Coast
The Wild Coast can be hiked year-round, but the conditions do vary quite a bit:
- Summer (October to March): Warm, lush, and green. Rivers run full, waterfalls are at their best, and the sea is warm enough to swim in properly. Just be ready for afternoon thunderstorms, they arrive fast.
- Autumn (April to May): My personal favourite time to hike. Warm days, cool nights, lower humidity, and fewer people on the coast. Rivers have calmed down from the summer rains.
- Winter (June to August): Dry and clear with excellent visibility. Whale watching season, with humpback whales passing close to shore. Mornings are cool but afternoons are lovely.
- Spring (September): Wildflowers start coming through, temperatures pick up, and the trail is quiet before the summer rush.

FAQs
Do I need hiking experience to do the Wild Coast trails?
For the Mtentu Ramble, no. The trail is graded moderate and suitable for fit beginners. General fitness matters more than technical experience.
How remote is the Wild Coast?
Very. No ATMs, no mobile signal in most areas, and limited vehicle access. That's part of the appeal. Bring cash, download offline maps before you leave, and enjoy being unreachable for a few days.
Can I do a solo hike on the Wild Coast?
Technically yes, but I wouldn't recommend it for first-timers. The terrain is genuinely difficult to navigate without local knowledge, river crossings can go wrong fast, and if something happens out there, help is a long way away. A guided trail is safer and, honestly, a far better experience.
Is the Wild Coast suitable for international travellers?
Absolutely. We regularly host guests from the UK, Netherlands, Germany, and further afield. Getting to Mtentu takes some planning, but we walk you through every step.
