Mtentu sits in the heart of the Wild Coast, a place where rivers cut deep gorges, roads wind over green hills, and cell signal fades away. That remoteness is what makes the experience so special. But it also means getting here takes a little planning.
Whether you’re coming from Durban, Johannesburg, or further afield, here are the best ways to reach the start of your Mtentu adventure.

Shuttle Service (Recommended)
Our top choice for guests is to use the reliable Margate Coach shuttle service.
They operate daily services from Durban (including King Shaka International Airport) down the South Coast. You can book a seat and get dropped in Port Edward, the nearest town to Mtentu. From here, it’s a short transfer to the Wild Coast Sun, where the 3-Day Explorer Trail begins.
This option removes the stress of navigating rural roads and lets you relax into holiday mode as soon as you land.
Self-Driving
If you prefer to drive yourself, here’s what to expect. Need to hire a car? Compare prices from Durban Airport:
👉 Find deals on Discover Cars →
From Durban
- Distance: ± 180 km
- Time: 3-3.5 hours by car
- Route: Take the N2 south, then follow the R61 towards Port Edward.
From Johannesburg
- Distance: ± 750 km
- Time: 8-9 hours by car
- Route: Take the N3 south towards Durban, then join the N2/R61 as above.
Final Stretch
You’ll park safely at the Wild Coast Sun Resort, where the Explorer Trail begins. Secure underground parking is available for R20 for the full 3 days.
👉 Tip: The last stretch of rural roads can be bumpy. A high-clearance vehicle is useful but not essential, just take it slow.
By Air + Transfer
- Durban (King Shaka International Airport): The most common entry point. From here, you can either self-drive or book the Margate Coach shuttle to Port Edward.
- Margate Airport: A small regional airport with flights from Johannesburg. If available, this can cut travel time significantly. From Margate, it’s a short taxi or shuttle ride to Port Edward.
- East London Airport: Another option, though further away (approx. 6-7 hours by car). Works best if you’re planning a longer Wild Coast trip.
Starting the Hike
No matter how you arrive, all hikers begin at the Wild Coast Sun. Here you’ll:
- Park your car or get dropped by shuttle
- Meet your guide at 09:30 am
- Start walking at 10:00 am
- Cross the dramatic Mzamba Suspension Bridge as your very first step into Pondoland
From there, your journey unfolds over beaches, rivers, homestays, and waterfalls before reaching Mtentu.

Logistics to Remember
- ATMs: Withdraw cash in Port Edward before heading into Mtentu (no ATMs beyond this point). See our currency guide →
- Fuel: Fill up your tank in Port Edward. Petrol stations are limited further south.
- Timing: Always aim to arrive the night before the hike starts. This avoids rushing and lets you rest. See our guide: Where to Stay Before and After the Hike →
- Where to stay the night before: We recommend booking in Port Edward so you're close to the Wild Coast Sun trailhead:
- The Estuary Hotel & Spa → (Upscale, ocean views, spa)
- The Edwardian → (Mid-range, central location)
- Caribbean Estates → (Mid-range, shuttle service, hiker-friendly)
- Ku-Boboyi River Lodge → (Budget, dorms and private rooms)
- Luggage: If joining the Explorer Trail, pack light in a backpack. Large suitcases are impractical for the river crossings. See: What to Pack for Travel Days →
