Day 1

153-metre Mzamba suspension bridge

Your adventure starts at the Wild Coast Sun, where you'll park safely in the underground day visitor parking (R20 for three days). Here you'll meet your guide at 09:30 am, ready to set off by 10:00 am.

The hike begins with a thrill: crossing the 153-metre Mzamba suspension bridge, swaying high above the gorge. From there, you'll follow the coastline, crossing your first river, the Mpahlane, on the beach. This is the first of several river crossings over the next three days, and many hikers kick off their shoes to feel the sand and surf underfoot.

By mid-afternoon you'll arrive at a cultural homestay in a local Pondoland village. You'll be welcomed with tea and freshly baked Mpondo bread, then settle in for the evening. Dinner is hearty, home-cooked, and shared around the table.

Facilities are simple but warm: a bucket shower, a clean toilet, and a comfortable mattress in a traditional rondavel. This first night is often the most memorable of the hike, not because of luxury, but because of the genuine hospitality.

Day 2

The Red Dunes along the Sikombe River

The Red Dunes along the Sikombe River

After a village breakfast, you'll set out again with your guide, heading across the Mnyameni River before climbing into one of the Wild Coast's great natural treasures: the Mtentu Red Dunes.

This stretch, sometimes called the "smallest desert in the world", glows deep ochre in the morning light. It's a surreal landscape, rich in archaeology and layered with history, and walking here feels like stepping back into another age.

From the dunes, you'll head back to the coast, crossing the Sikombe River and arriving at our Hiking Shack Dormitory.

This stop offers more comfort than the homestay:

  • Flushing toilets
  • A gas-powered shower with pressure pump
  • A washbasin for freshening up
  • 12-volt charging points and lights

Meals are included throughout your stay, and after a day on the trail, you'll sit down to dinner before relaxing around a fire in the boma.

Day 3

Mkambati Waterfall

Your final day begins with a hearty breakfast in the Hiking Shack before you head out on a loop into Mkhambathi Nature Reserve.

The day starts with a short crossing of the Mtentu Estuary, where you'll be ferried across by boat. From there, it's a gentle 4 km hike into the reserve. Along the way, you'll pass the site of the Weolmi shipwreck, a reminder of how treacherous these seas have always been.

The highlight comes when you reach the waterfalls. Few places on Earth offer sights like these:

Here you'll have time to swim, explore, and enjoy your packed lunch with some of the most breathtaking views on the Wild Coast.

By late afternoon, you'll return to the Hiking Shack for your final night. Dinner is served with your choice of wine, beer, or cider, and the day closes with a crackling fire under the stars.

A Journey in Three Acts

The Mtentu Explorer Hike is a journey in three parts:

  • Day 1: Cultural immersion at a homestay, where you'll share food, laughter, and stories with a Pondoland family.
  • Day 2: Natural wonder in the red dunes, ending at the comfort of the Hiking Shack.
  • Day 3: Waterfalls and wild cliffs in Mkhambathi Nature Reserve, with a final night of fire and fellowship.

Along the way, you'll cross rivers, walk beaches, climb dunes, and swim beneath waterfalls. Each step brings a new story, a new view, a new connection to the Wild Coast.
