Most people come to Mtentu for the big sights, the waterfalls that plunge into the ocean, the red dunes, the long, empty beaches. And those are unforgettable. But if you stay a little longer, or if you follow a local guide who knows the land, you’ll find that Mtentu hides a few secrets. These are the hidden gems of the Wild Coast, places where you’ll feel like you’ve stepped into your own private discovery.

The Jacuzzi Hole

The Jacuzzi Hole at Mkambati
It doesn’t look like much until you stand above it. Beneath the falls, the water has carved out a perfect natural plunge pool. It’s three metres deep, hidden in the rock, with a ledge nearby that makes the jump feel daring. Slide in, let the bubbles roar around you, and you’ll see why we call it the Jacuzzi Hole.
More than just a swim, it’s a Wild Coast rite of passage. (Read more about the Jacuzzi Hole here →)
Horseshoe Falls Picnic Spot

Horseshoe Falls on the Wild Coast
Everyone talks about Horseshoe Falls, but few know about the little rock shelf just above it, tucked into the riverbank. From here, you can spread out a blanket, dip your feet in a shallow pool, and watch the water fan out in its wide arc before tumbling away.
It’s not marked, and it’s easy to miss unless you’ve got a local with you. But once you find it, it’s the perfect lunch stop on a river hike.
The Red Dunes at Sunset

The red dunes of Mtentu glowing at sunset
The dunes are no secret, they glow bright ochre even from a distance. But the secret is when to go. Late afternoon, when the sun drops low and the sand turns molten red, the dunes come alive. The wind dies down, the light softens, and it feels like you’re walking through a painting.
Take your time here. Climb slowly, breathe deep, and let the view of sea and sky sink in. (Read our Red Dunes feature here →)
Hidden Beaches and Shell Beds

A hidden beach near Mtentu with driftwood on the sand
Just south of the lodge, the tide pulls back to reveal beds of shells and driftwood. Walk slowly, and you’ll spot cowries, sand dollars, and tiny spirals polished smooth by the sea.
If you keep going, you’ll find small coves hidden between headlands, where fishermen cast quietly and Nguni cattle sometimes wander onto the sand. These are places for long, slow walks, where you might not see another person all day. (More on hiking Mtentu’s beaches here →)
Secret Pools of the Mtentu River

Swimming in a secret pool on the Mtentu River
Upstream from the main waterfalls, the Mtentu River hides a series of quiet pools, best reached by kayak. They’re shaded by forest, cooled by trickling falls, and perfect for a private swim.
On hot afternoons, these spots are pure magic, dragonflies skimming above the water, birds calling from the canopy, and nothing but the ripple of water for company.
Vulture Lookout in Mkhambathi

Cape vulture soaring above the Wild Coast
Cross the river into Mkhambathi Nature Reserve, and you’ll find a grassy ridge where Cape vultures rise on the thermals. The colony here is one of the largest in South Africa, but the best part is standing quietly as dozens of wings cut across the sky above you.
It’s a place that makes you feel both small and part of something much bigger. (Explore Mkhambathi Reserve here →)
The Cultural Homestay

Traditional homestead meal at the Mnyameni homestay
It’s not hidden in the sense of geography, but it is a side of Mtentu many don’t expect. On the first night of the 3-day Explorer Trail, you’ll stay in a village homestay. Rondavels, bucket showers, and home-cooked Mpondo bread shared around the fire.
It’s not polished, and that’s the point. It’s real, and it connects you to the people who have called this coast home for generations. (Read more about the homestay experience here →)
