The Jacuzzi Hole At Mkambathi Falls

Some places along the Wild Coast don't just look wild, they feel wild. The Jacuzzi Hole at Mkambathi Falls is one of those. Hidden in the midst of Mkambathi Falls, it's a perfect little plunge pool carved by the force of the waterfall itself.

From above, it looks almost too perfect: a round, bubbling pool tucked right beneath the falls, constantly refreshed by the cascade. And then you notice the ledge. Just next to the pool, the rock drops away sharply, making the plunge seem riskier than it really is.

Jumping into the Jacuzzi Hole is about three metres from the rock ledge above. It's high enough to get your heart racing, but not so high that you need experience or special training.

It's a test of courage more than anything else.

Why We Call It the "Jacuzzi Hole"

Mkambathi Falls and the Jacuzzi Hole

Mkambathi Falls and the Jacuzzi Hole

The name isn't just for fun. Once you're in, the water churns and bubbles from the force of the falls above, wrapping you in a natural hydro-massage. It's equal parts refreshing and exhilarating, the kind of thing no spa could ever replicate.

The pool sits right in the heart of Mkambathi Falls, where the river makes its final leap before crashing into the Indian Ocean at high tide. The surrounding rock has been sculpted smooth by centuries of water, creating a natural basin that holds you while the cascade thunders around you. Look up and you'll see the falls framing the sky. Look out and you'll see the ocean stretching to the horizon. There's nowhere else quite like it.

Tips Before You Take the Plunge

  • Wear secure swim gear. The water churns hard; the flimsy gear won't stay on.
  • Jump feet first. Please keep it simple and safe.
  • Take turns. The pool isn't huge, so wait until it's clear before you go.
  • Respect the river. The water is beautiful but powerful; treat it with care.

What You'll See Along the Way

Jumping from Baboon Cave into the pool below

The Jacuzzi Hole isn't a destination you reach in isolation. The walk through Mkhambathi Nature Reserve to get there is an adventure in itself.

  • Strandloper Falls - visible from Baboon Cave, these falls roar down into deep pools framed by cliffs. Keep an eye out for Spotty, the resident spotted eel who calls the pools below home.
  • Baboon Cave - a natural overhang above the river where chacma baboons gather. The brave among you can leap from the cave into the pool below.
  • Wildlife on the grasslands - herds of eland graze within sight of the ocean, while zebra and blesbok move across the open plains. Overhead, Cape vultures wheel in the thermals from the nearby cliff colony.
  • The coastline itself - 10 kilometres of untouched Wild Coast shoreline, where waterfalls meet the surf and dolphins play just beyond the breakers.

By the time you reach the Jacuzzi Hole, you've already had a full day of hiking through one of South Africa's most unique reserves.

FAQs About the Jacuzzi Hole

How high is the jump?

About 3 metres, just enough to be thrilling without being extreme.

Is it safe?

Yes, as long as you jump straight into the pool and check the water depth first. The ledge makes it look more dangerous than it is.

Can kids do it?

Older kids and teens can, but only with supervision. Younger children will enjoy swimming in the calmer pools nearby.

Do I need to be fit?

Not especially. The paddle and short walk to the falls are manageable for most visitors.
