The Homestay

One of the most memorable parts of walking into Mtentu is spending the night in a local homestead in the Mnyameni region. There are two active homesteads in the region. After a day on the trail, you arrive in a small Pondoland village, where the local family has opened its doors to expose visitors to the simple Amapondo life, which has remained unchanged for centuries.

You'll sleep in a traditional mud-and-thatch rondavel, a simple yet comfortable accommodation with clean bedding laid out for you. There's no electricity here, just paraffin lanterns and firelight. A bucket of hot water, warmed over the fire, becomes your evening shower. It may sound modest, but after a long hike, it feels like pure luxury.

Hospitality in Its Purest Form

Hospitality at the Mnyameni homestead

Your host greets you with tea or a piece of freshly baked Mpondo bread. Dinner is a hearty, home-cooked meal, nothing fancy, just food prepared with care and shared around the table. Your hostess will try her best to facilitate special dietary requirements, but please bear in mind, that in our rural areas, there are no shops catering for special diets. Please ensure that you carry something with you to nibble on for the first night.

What stands out most isn't the meal or the setting, but the connection. You swap stories, laugh with your hosts, and feel a genuine sense of belonging. By the time you climb into bed, you've experienced not just a new place, but a new way of life. The hostesses, being the eldest, struggle with communication. This is where the knowledgeable children jump in to help.

Why the Homestay Matters

The homestay isn't a tourist package for show. It's real life in Pondoland, offered with openness and pride.

  • You support local families directly, keeping the benefits of travel in the community.
  • You experience daily rhythms, collecting water, cooking over fires, living without the hum of modern noise.
  • You gain insight into the amaPondo way of life, which has thrived here for centuries.

It's a rare chance to see the Wild Coast not just as scenery, but as home.

Just Part of a Bigger Journey

Life at the homestead - cultivating the land

Life at the homestead - cultivating the land

The cultural homestay is only the beginning. It's part one of a Four-day experience that takes you deeper into the Wild Coast.

  • Day One: Arrive at the homestay after your first hike, share food and stories, and sleep under thatched roofs.
  • Day Two: Continue along the trail through red dunes and beaches, reaching The Hiking Shack for a night by the water. The Hiking Shack belongs to the Sonjica family, whose head is Thulani. Thulani is also our landlord and has graciously allowed us to live on his family's ground.
  • Day Three: Hike down to the Mtentu River, where either Orgie or Anathi will ferry you across to the Mkhambathi Nature Reserve to see waterfalls that crash into the sea. Our resident Spotted Eel awaits you at Baboon Cave, whilst you gaze at Strandlooper Falls, or leap into the pond below.
  • Day Four: Decide what time you would like to depart. After a magnificent breakfast, leap onto your steed to take you back to the Wild Coast Casino. Experience first hand taxi travel. Our 48 kilometers of dirt road to the R61 normally takes 2 hours, but after big rains, can take up to 4.

It's a journey of contrasts: from the humble richness of the homestay to the wide-open drama of dunes and waterfalls, ending with the comfort of the Hiking Shack at Mtentu. Next door is the Pamper Shack, where our fully trained local ladies can deliver delicious massages. From Full Body to Feet & Legs, to nullify the aches from fresh air exercise.
